Do You Have the Courage to be Yourself?

“A life of imitation is an existence of limitation.”

Some wear the label of “chameleon” as a gift bestowed upon them from a preternatural source; a badge of distinction that signifies their ability to change shape, alter language and create the personal posture that adapts to the environment. In sales, this can work for or against the sales person. The savvy buyer can spot the authentic from the inauthentic, the sycophantic from the sincere. Life has a way of adjusting, reconciling and “truing-up” words and actions with the nature of the person.

People get in situations where they take on a “persona of pretend.” They try to mold their actions to create the impression they think furthers their interests with others. They take the actions that become the embodiment or the living expression of that image.

All you can be is you – the authentic you. Trying to be someone else for a specific or general purpose frays at the fabric of your individuality and creates a non-entity – a projection, a mirage. Have the courage to be yourself. People form impressions based on perceptions – those perceptions can become their reality. Allow another to form impressions that are experienced as their reality by being consistent and in alignment with your word, behavior and character.

Here’s the takeaway: when nature reveals what and who you are, it would behoove you to be the person the buyer believes you to be. Anything less is a fracture of credibility and credibility once fractured, can never be rebuilt.
